Where the heck is Bend, TX?
Bend is located in the southeast corner of San Saba County in the northern Texas Hill Country (about 90 minutes northwest of Austin, TX). Walking Horse Ranch is just a few miles southwest of there. Travel distances and map are located on the Travel & Location page.
What should I bring and what should I expect?
Depending on what time of year you book your hunt you should bring attire fitting to the current temperature range. In the peak season months of October through February, temperatures can vary drastically week to week. We could have days that approach 90 or mornings down in the teens. You do not need camouflage clothing if you plan on hunting from blinds only, although darker shirts/jackets are preferred. A good pair of broken-in hiking or hunting boots is a must. You will need to bring your own rifles or bows/arrows and ammunition. For those taking home their meat (as most do) you will need to bring coolers. A small bag or backpack is helpful in taking items into the field. Binoculars are also good to bring or you use a pair of ours. It is highly suggested you bring your camera or video recorder. We should have you covered for everything else you need for a successful hunt and comfortable stay.
How is the phone service on the ranch?
In recent years, wireless service on the ranch has improved greatly. AT&T and Verizon typically work well in most areas. A landline phone is available along with wifi/internet access.
What caliber of rifle is appropriate?
We prefer that clients hunt whitetail and exotics with .270 and larger rifles. Exceptions made for youth that hunt with a smaller cartridge such as .243. Larger exotics such as Gemsbok and Wildebeest will require at least a 30 caliber rifle.
Should my rifle be sited in before I get to the ranch?
It’s preferable to already have your rifle sited before you arrive. However, we are more than happy to have you check your rifle on our range and help you site in as needed.
How is my meat or trophy mount cared for?
Harvested deer, exotics and hogs are quartered and hung in our walk in cooler where they remain at a perfect temperature until your leave the ranch. We then pack them in ice in the coolers that you provide. Trophy animals are caped and cleaned up after photos are taken and also hung in the cooler until your departure. We can handle both taxidermy, meat processing, and shipping as a third party service at cost + processing fee.

Is there any paperwork I will need to complete?
Yes. Hunters and guests will need to sign and date liability release forms as well as policy forms that explain safety and firearms handling rules while on the ranch. This is to ensure the safety of our clients, guests, and staff members. Your safety remains our top concern at all times.
What will be required of me physically to partake in a hunting adventure?
All hunts can be customized to the needs and abilities of the client. Those in good physical shape may prefer spot and stalk hunts which may require several miles of hiking each day. Others may prefer to hunt from blinds only. All tower blinds have stairs and safety rails. Ground blinds are also available. Any physical conditions that could be of concern (heart condition, allergies, restricted movement, etc) should be made known to Serengeti Bend staff so we can help you as much as possible. The closest hospital to the ranch is in Lampasas, roughly 30 miles away.
How far in advance should I book my hunt and is a deposit required?
You may book a hunt at any time including during the current season. Space is limited so it always best to book as far in advance as you can. 50% of the hunt base fee is required to hold a booking on the calendar. If you have to cancel your trip, the deposit will be credited to a future hunt.
Can my children or spouse come along?
Yes. Non-hunting guests are welcome. We charge a daily fee for each guest. Our hunting operation and lodge is kid and spouse friendly and we fully support getting more kids and females exposed to hunting and the outdoors.
